THe Minister of Health, Dr Osagie ehanire, on Wednesday said the Federal Government order on lockdown in some parts of the country had not helped to scale down transmission of COVID-19 because some doctors were conducting secret treatment for people infected with the virus.

In a statement by the Assistant Director, Press Unit, Ministry of Health, Mrs eunice Akro, the minister said the action undermined the efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The statement said, “The Minister of Health, Dr ehanire, has advocated concerted efforts in the fight against the coronavirus, which has entered its second month of ravaging the country from the time of the index case on April 27, 2020.

“The minister disclosed that the increasing figure of positive cases, which does not spare people in 32 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, is attributable to community transmission due to non-compliance with lock down directives.

“The minister also identified non-medical interventions, incompetence and unauthorised secret treatment by doctors in un-accredited health facilities and homes.

“For better handling, Dr ehanire disclosed that the number of diagnostic laboratories in the country have been upgraded to 15.”

On the rise in the number of cases in Kano State, the health minister said the team of medical experts sent to the state by the FG to examine the situation was empowered to offer technical support to the Kano State Government in its COVID-19 response as well as investigating causes of deaths in the state.
