Former Vice President and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, Wednesday, warned that President Goodluck Jonathan’s insistence on running in 2011 will polarize the country.

This came even as President Jonathan, reacted to the controversy over his speeches during his declaration for the Presidency, saying he is focused on accomplishments rather than future promises.

Atiku, in a statement by his campaign organisation said President Jonathan’s aspiration was in total negation of the zoning system provided for in the party’s constitution and the pact of the founding fathers of the PDP.

The statement quoted Atiku as saying while addressing party supporters and delegates from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States that:”This nation has survived thus far because our founding fathers have maintained a delicate balance between the regions; between the two great religions and among our various ethnic groups.

“I’m convinced that those who want power rotation jettisoned do not have the best interest of the country at heart. The anti_zoning elements want to plunge this country into a needless crisis.”

Atiku warned that Jonathan’s candidacy will eventually lead to the realization of the illegal Third Term agenda of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which he and other patriots fought against and defeated in 2006, just as he urged his supporters to ensure that a northern candidate emerged the winner of the forthcoming PDP primaries.

Gang-up doomed to fail

President Jonathan said the move by his opponents in the race for the 2011 Presidential election to have a consensus candidate from the North to fight him was doomed to fail.

Jonathan who was referring to former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, his immediate past National Security Adviser, NSA, General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, Ex_Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Kwara State governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said: “The verdict of Nigerians from all walks of life on posturing of these candidates is clear: a strong, united and forward_looking Nigeria under the joint ticket of Jonathan and Sambo is preferable to an opportunistic gang_up of strange bedfellows who seem ready to sacrifice the unity of the country if their individual ambitions cannot be met.”

A statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Jonathan Campaign Organization, Mr. Sully Abu, also noted that the recent declaration by Jonathan at the Eagle Square which drew a record crowd “quite clearly appears to have frightened his political opponents.
