IJAW GROUP REJECTS EX-SGF AS NIGER DELTA MINISTER

2008-11-14

The Ijaw Monitoring Group (IMG) has vowed to resist alleged planned appointment of former secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Ufot Ekate as minister of the new Niger Delta Ministry, warning that the appointment of any person “who is not sensitive to the plight of Niger Delta people will worsen the crisis in the areas.”

In a statement signed by the Coordinator of IMG, Comrade Joseph Evah, the group which claimed to have information on plans to make the former SGF minister of the new ministry said the former SGF despite holding an influential position in he Obasanjo administration, did nothing to solve the problem of the region.

“Ekaete was coordinating all the countless presidential talks on Niger delta as the SGF with hired groups and leaders to waste our time. Despite that, the only East-west road we have became a death trap during the era of Obasanjo which Ekaete was a major player.

“The president can appoint him as minister in any other area so that he can continue to carry files”, the group said, alleging that the former SGF did not influence and attract any good thing to the Niger Delta while he was in office.

The group also frowned at alleged plans to nominate the former Petroleum minister, Dr. Rilwan Lukman as a minister in the current dispensation. According to the group, “People like Lukman should take a rest and let Nigeria experience new leaders.”

The group recalled the era of oil boom and wondered what he as then petroleum minister did to prevent the current crisis which according to the group is an aftermath of the “wasted years.”
