Today, many transactions are done online, so much so that physical meetings for certain business have reduced. As a result of this, there is need therefore for business owners to enhance their sites in order to grow the business.

Experts say that the first challenge faced by online businesses is lack of traffic. If a business website is not getting any traffic, there will not be sales.

According to Wikipedia, traffic on a website means the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a web site which is a large portion of Internet traffic. This is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit. Sites monitor the incoming and outgoing traffic to see which parts or pages of their site are popular and if there are any apparent trends, such as one specific page being viewed mostly by people in a particular country.

The founder of techtrendng.com, Mr Kenneth Omeruo, says that the key to increasing website sales is not always to increase traffic to your site but to make the site interesting so that visitors will always come back.

He says, ”Check the title description and keywords that are added to your website pages as they will also attract more qualified potential buyers. Use a keyword selection tool like Google‘s AdWords Keyword Tool to research targeted keywords that attract maximum traffic for minimal cost-per-click.”

The President of Nigeria Internet Group, Mr Lanre Ajayi, agrees that email newsletters and announcements, which tell people on your list(s) about your website and what they can find there and why they should visit are also important.

He adds, ”In the text of your page especially your home page, use the words that best describe you and the needs of your target audience as part of the body text. After all this is done - register the site with Google, Yahoo and other major search engines.”

Ajayi also says to attract traffic, efforts should also be made to notes that there is need for online business owners to keep reviewing the statistics.

Experts further stress that adding a signup form on the site and some incentive for people to sign up for the organisation’s newsletter will build return visits to the website, noting that it is important to remind visitors of the website.

Ajayi says links to other websites will build credibility and also improve a website’s position in the search engine, noting that these are called in-bound links.

Omeruo further adds that if you have a resource or links page on your site, you can link out to useful sites and then contact the other website owner and ask them to link to you. If you have affiliates, partners, sponsors, or other relationships, send them the link to your website, your logo and a key phrase and ask if they will add your link to their website.

He, however, says that you should add your website address to your email signature file, noting that you should make this also an organisation policy and have everyone create a standard signature file that includes the website link.

He adds that making use of large social networking sites such as Facebook will increase the profile as well as participating in the groups and discussion forums.

This, he says, will increase the traffic to the website but argues that the website must be engaging and interesting to the person and have some appropriate calls to action, otherwise the efforts will bring traffic but not help in achieving the objectives.

Ajayi says affiliate programmes also referred to as reseller or associate programmes-are a great way to get other people to promote product or services.

Furthermore, Omeruo stresses that it is important for visitors to start hearing from the company on a regular basis as soon as they visit the site without having to deal with the stress of writing tons of e-mails to individual addresses.

They also say that there are no definite ways of growing your traffic but you must focus on implementing one or two marketing strategies very well
