Eight persons were feared dead and 40 seriously wounded as a religious clash broke out on Tuesday in Wukari, Taraba State over the building of a mosque in a local police station.

Agence France Presse reports that six mosques and a church were also torched in the clash.

AFP quotes the Commissioner of Police, Taraba State Command, Mr. Aliyu Musa, as having said on the telephone that a Christian mob opposed to the construction of the mosque razed it.

Muslims responded by attacking a nearby church, leading to the eruption of violence between the two sides, Musa said.

”From reports at our disposal, eight people have been killed and 40 others seriously injured in the violence while six mosques and one church were burnt,” he added.

Police sent in reinforcements and calm was restored on Wednesday, Musa said.
