Staying healthy is practically everyone’s desire and one way to achieve this is by ensuring that one consumes hygienic food all the time.

Fortunately, there are home sanitising systems that can help in achieving this, especially if the foods concerned are fruits and vegetables. Reports say these harbour more germs than any other kind of food. It is also common knowledge that fruits and vegetables often get to homes covered in pesticides, dust and other dirt, either from the packing process or even from other people’s touch.

The Lotus home-sanitising system is one of those that help in fighting these germs and keeping the fruits and vegetables healthy for consumption. It uses the power of ozone to sanitise water used for washing, so that the germs have no place to hide. The system turns tap water into a powerful sanitising solvent for the home. It comes with a sanitising bowl to be used in washing the fresh produce and the bowl removes pesticides from fresh fruit and vegetables.

It is also easy to operate as all one needs to do is plug the power cord to the system into a standard wall outlet, fill the spray bottle with cold tap water and place the bottle on the unit’s round sanitising element. Pressing the system’s “Start” button will then automatically begin the sanitising process, which takes about two minutes before it is complete.

Coolestgadgets.com recommends that it is best to use the bottle within 15 minutes for optimal results. After the time has passed, the process can be repeated if the user desires. During the process, the user is expected to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables to remove visible dirt and contaminants. After sanitising the bowl, the fruits and vegetables will then go through the same process.

The lotus sanitiser can also be used in other capacities in the home. These include cleaning countertops, appliances, floors, high chairs, other baby items, upholstery, windows, cutting boards, and any surface that attracts mold or mildew. Even carpets and laundry stains – including red wine and pet stains – are easy to remove, with no harsh fumes or residue. Lotus also eliminates germs and pesticides from other types of food. Reports show that it extends the shelf life of fruits and produce up to four times longer than if they have been rinsed with tap water.

The compact yet powerful Vege-Kleen is another tool for sanitising fruits. It uses ozone technology to achieve this. According to squidoo.com, it is placed under the counter and has an optional faucet through which ‘ozonated’ water flows into the kitchen sink. The unit delivers chemical free sterilisation of water and kills micro-organisms, including E-Coli, Salmonella, bacteria, viruses, molds, pesticides and more as well as removes odours. It is also easy to install.

Vege-Kleen is not only ideal for residential cleaning vegetables and fruits says its manufacturers, it is equally good for food preparation or anywhere that sterile clean water is needed. In delivering up to 0.7 parts per million – ppm – of ozone concentration in water, helps to rid fruits, vegetables and meats of bacteria. It creates ozone through state-of-the-art radiance discharge – ozone is described as natures own organic way to clean and sanitise. It is said to occur in nature most often as a result of lightning during a thunderstorm and described as the fresh, clean rain smell that is noticed after a rain storm. Ozone is reported to be a powerful oxidizer, which penetrates and creates holes in bacterial walls, destroying the bacteria.

As bacteria is what spoils fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish, Ozone oxidises toxic substances 3,000 times faster than chlorine and unlike chlorine, it is completely safe and natural. Vege-Kleen is used as a source of collecting this ‘ozonated’ water that cleanses food. It is equally described as the greatest answer to pure and clean water solutions.

Pro-San is another device for sanitising fruits and vegetable as it kills about 90 per cent of bacteria on contact. And for those who do not have the patience of going through the ‘long’ sanitising process, the Grab-n-Go Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Wipes will do the magic. All a user needs to do with the wipe, is to clean the fruit or vegetable with the wipe.

As momgadget.com reports, citric acid and sea salt are some of the ingredients that make up the Grab-n-Go wipes and it does not leave odour or taste on the fruit and vegetables, or whatever it is used on.

Tips for cleaner fruits and vegetable

-Wash your hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap before and after preparing fresh produce.

- Cut away any damaged or bruised areas before preparing and eating.

-Gently rub produce while holding under plain running water. There’s no need to use soap or a produce wash.

-Wash produce before you peel it so dirt and bacteria aren’t transferred from the knife onto the fruit or veggie.

-Use a vegetable brush to scrub firm produce, such as melons and cucumbers.

-Dry produce with a clean cloth or paper towel to further reduce bacteria that may be present.

-Throw away the outermost leaves of a head of lettuce or cabbage.
