The National Health Insurance Scheme said it has released funds for the payment of capitation and fee-for-service for its subscribers for the second quarter of 2020.

A statement signed by its Head, Media and Public Relations, Ayo Osinlu, on Tuesday stated that the move was among its corporate initiatives to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

The statement said, “This is to guarantee uninterrupted access to healthcare services by subscribers of the scheme in these challenging times. By this timely action, NHIS has ensured that no subscribers will be turned back from any facility for non-payment of appropriate fees by any Health Maintenance Organisation.

“The scheme took the step to ensure that the looming threat of COVID-19 is not compounded by the subscribers’ inability to access healthcare services at the points of need.”

NHIS added that it had issued guidelines to the health care facilities and the Health Maintenance Organisations on certain actions to be taken towards protecting the interests of the subscribers in the current situation.

The scheme noted that the guidelines contained concrete provisions to prevent service failure and also to ensure that subscribers enjoyed effective health care services in spite of general restrictions and outright lock down in certain parts of the country as a result of coronavirus pandemic.

“The guidelines gave clear order to healthcare providers to ensure the safety and protection of their personnel against COVID-19 infection, provide a timely and appropriate level of care for all NHIS subscribers as may be required, and to ensure that no NHIS subscribers is denied access to care,” it stated.
