INEC to display voter register March 2

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday said the commission would display the final list of registered voters on March 2, 2011.

Jega stated this at a workshop in Abuja for Civil Society Organisations, where he was represented by an INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Lai Olurode. The INEC boss said the common denominator among Nigerians was a desire to build a credible democratic culture.

“As you are well aware, the voter registration exercisehas been concluded successfully and the display of the Preliminary List of Voters will soon commence for registrants to make claims and objections. After the display, the official register will be compiled and published by March 2, ahead of the April elections.”

At a separate event, Jega restated INEC’s commitment towards enthroning a credible democratic culture in Nigeria. He said this while innaugurating a joint committee with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission as part of measures to eliminate all forms of corrupt practices in the electoral process.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Acting Chairman and National Commissioner in-charge of Operations, Dr. Nuru Yakubu, the INEC boss described the committee as the culmination of a collective approach to the fight against corruption in the nation’s electoral system.

Members of the committee include Oche Gordon, M. A. Salame, S.L. Wakama, Rasheedat Okoduwa (all from ICPC) and Okey Ndeche, Torgba Nyitse, Ibrahim Biu, Mustapha Kuta, Ikwunma Halliday and Saseyi Feyijimi (INEC).
