Two corps members die in Bayelsa

The National Youth Service Corps suffered yet another tragedy as two of its members in Bayelsa State lost their lives in a boat mishap.

This is coming barely three weeks after nine corps members were killed in post-election violence in Bauchi State.

Our correspondent gathered that the boat mishap, which threw corps members in the state into mourning, occurred along Nembe waterways on Friday.

It was gathered that the incident happened when two boats carrying unknown number of passengers collided along the waterways.

The corps members were said to have left Nembe for Yenagoa, the state capital on a speedboat.

Though some victims of the mishap were said to have swum to safety, the late corps members were said to have drowned because they could not swim.

Other passengers who sustained various degrees of injuries were reportedly rescued by sympathisers living along the creek.

Our correspondent gathered that the corpses of the corps members were still missing.

However, divers were said to have been sent to the area to retrieve the remains of the deceased.

Details of the victims were still sketchy as the state Coordinator, NYSC, Mrs. Nnenna Ukoha, who confirmed the incident, said she had little information about their identities.

Ukoha said she was waiting for the corpses to be recovered so as to determine the identities of the victims.

She also said the death would be communicated to the families of the deceased before disclosing the victims’ identities to the public.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Eguavoen Emokpae, confirmed the incident, but said he was yet to get details

Ijaw Monitoring Group is also using this to recall the attention of the Federal Government to scrap the NYSC Scheme or allow a review on the scheme such that all you corper will serve in their State of Origin.
