Release Egberipapa, others – IMG

The Ijaw Monitoring group has faulted the claim by the Amnesty Committee that militants who submitted their arms will not be arrested.

In a statement signed by Comrade Joseph Evah, Coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group, the group wondered why the JTF was keeping some repentant militants in its detention camp, expressing fears that those being detained may be eliminated even after the expiration of the amnesty.

The group identified some of the militants being detained as Comrade Egberipapa, who, it said, was arrested at the palace of the Amanyanabo of Kalabari during a visit to the palace to make peace and some of the Asari-Dokubo boys who were on their way to discuss the surrender of arms in Rivers State, but were arrested by JTF through an informant.

The group urged the international community “especially the UN, European Union and the Commonwealth to help stop the possible execution of Egberipapa and all those being kept in detention so far.

It advised the Amnesty Committee to prevail on the JTF to release all repentant militants in various detention centres across the country if they were to be sincere with the job given to them.

“How can Atake Tom and other militants trust the Amnesty committee when repentant militants like Egberipapa are detained in Abuja?” It expressed fear that if those detained were not released, it would cast doubt on the safety of those who have already accepted amnesty.
